The bearing edge is the cut at the top and bottom of the shell where the drumhead touches the wood. It is a few millimeters of geometry that changes the drum more than the finish, the hardware or the badge ever will.
Wood species affects both halves of a custom drum — how it sounds and how it looks. Density, stiffness and grain all play a part, and some of the most beautiful woods are also the most interesting sounding ones.
